Canada is the top destination for Indian students seeking a study abroad experience that directly leads to permanent residency. Over 250,000 Indian students are currently studying in Canada, making it the country's largest international student community. Here's exactly how to get your study permit approved.

Study Permit vs Student Visa: What's the Difference?

Many students confuse these two documents. Here's the distinction:

  • A Canadian student visa (Temporary Resident Visa / eTA) allows you to enter Canada
  • A Study Permit allows you to study in Canada at a Designated Learning Institution

Most Indian students need both — the student visa for entry and the study permit to attend their institution. If you're applying from India, both are typically issued together through the same application.

Documents Required

  • Acceptance letter from a DLI (Designated Learning Institution)
  • Valid passport
  • Financial proof (see below)
  • Letter of Explanation / SOP — explaining your study plans and intent to leave Canada after studies
  • Academic transcripts
  • English language test scores (IELTS, TOEFL, PTE)
  • Biometric data (fingerprints + photo)
  • Passport photos
  • ✅ Medical examination (if requested by IRCC)

Financial Proof Requirements

You must demonstrate you can cover your studies and living expenses. IRCC requires:

  • First year's tuition fees in full
  • Minimum CAD 10,000 for living expenses for the first year
  • Return travel costs

So for a course costing CAD 22,000/year, you'd need at least CAD 32,000 visible in your account. Funds should have been in your account for at least 3–6 months and be clearly traceable (bank statements, FD certificates, salary records).

Application Steps

  1. Create a IRCC account (MyAccount on the Government of Canada website)
  2. Complete the online study permit application (IMM 1294)
  3. Upload all documents including financial proof, acceptance letter, and SOP
  4. Pay the application fee: CAD 150
  5. Submit biometrics at a Visa Application Centre in India (CAD 85)
  6. Wait for processing — 4–8 weeks for online applications
  7. If approved, receive a Port of Entry (POE) letter
  8. Present POE letter at the Canadian border to receive your physical study permit

PGWP Eligibility — Critical Checklist

Not all study permits lead to PGWP eligibility. Ensure:

  • Your institution is a PGWP-eligible DLI (most universities and colleges are)
  • Your program is a full-time study of at least 8 months
  • You maintain full-time enrollment throughout
  • Your program is at a public institution OR a private institution with 50%+ public funding

Some private colleges offer programs that don't qualify for PGWP. Always verify PGWP eligibility before enrolling — this is one of the most important checks GS Study Abroad performs for every student.

Common Refusal Reasons (and How to Avoid Them)

  • Insufficient financial proof: Show consistent bank balances, not just a recent deposit
  • Weak SOP (Letter of Explanation): Officers want to see genuine study intent and clear ties to India (family, property, future employment plans)
  • Choosing a non-DLI: Always verify DLI status before applying
  • Academic gaps unexplained: Any gaps in your academic history should be explained with a cover letter
  • Incomplete application: Every field must be filled; every document must be uploaded in the right format
